The service menu names sound similar, but they solve different problems. Here's the actual difference between the three manicures people ask about most.
Gel overlay vs. gel polish, in one paragraph
Gel polish is a thin layer of color cured on your natural nail. A gel overlay is a layer of hard gel applied over your own nail, so you get a smooth, protected surface without any added length. A gel extension goes one step further and adds length with a gel tip or sculpted form. So the choice between overlay and extension is really a choice about length: an overlay keeps the length you have, an extension builds the length you want.
Gel-Overlay Manicure — for your natural nail, protected
This is a layer of hard gel applied directly over your own nail — no added length, no tips. It's the closest thing to "no manicure at all" in terms of look, but with a protective gel layer and the dry-cuticle prep described in our Russian manicure explainer. Book this if your natural nails are a length and shape you're happy with and you want them protected, glossy, and finished — not extended.
Gel Nail Extension — for added length
This adds real length using a gel tip or sculpted gel form, then finishes with the same gel-polish top coat. It's the right call if your natural nail is short, uneven, or prone to breaking and you want a specific length and shape rather than working with what's already there. Extensions need slightly more maintenance as your natural nail grows underneath — expect to come back for a fill sooner than a pure overlay. See our full extensions guide for shapes, maintenance, and what a fill appointment involves. Want to add a design? See our nail art guide.
No-Polish Manicure — for the health-focused, no-color option
Full shaping, cuticle work, and buffing, with a clear finish or none at all — no gel, no polish. This is the one to book if you want the hygiene and precision of a real manicure without any coating on top: before a wedding where you'll be reapplying your own polish, between gel sets to let your nails breathe, or simply if you don't wear color. If you want a treatment built specifically around strengthening the nail itself rather than just skipping polish, see our Japanese manicure explainer too.
European Express Manicure — for a quicker visit
A shorter-format version of the gel-overlay service, for when you want the same gel-polish finish but have less time on the clock. Ask us at booking whether it fits what you're looking for that day — it's the right trade-off for a quick touch-up, not a substitute for the full treatment if your nails need more attention.

Whichever you pick, none of them involve acrylic — see why we don't offer it if you're curious about that decision. Booking a pedicure too? See our pedicure options guide. All of these are on the menu at our Russian manicure salon in Downtown San Diego.
Quick answers
Does a gel overlay add length? No. It goes directly over your natural nail with no tips and no added length.
Is a gel overlay the same as a gel full set? No. A full set usually means extensions on every nail. An overlay stays on your natural nail. At AK.LUX.NAILS the Russian Gel-Overlay Manicure is $99 to $109 depending on the nail artist's level (about 2 to 2.5 hours), and the Gel Nail Extension is $150 (about 3 hours). Current prices are on our prices page.
Do you use acrylic for either one? No. Gel only, on every service.
